Today in NOLA 9.11.17

Today kicks off the citywide culinary celebration Restaurant Week, so dine on a dime at NOLA's top spots. Mayoral candidates will gather to discuss their policies as they relate to the city's music industry. Alt rockers Modest Mouse perform at The Civic, while Instant Opus returns to the Hi-Ho. On this day in 1722, the state’s first recorded hurricane wiped out New Orleans. If you're looking for something to do tonight besides find a good T.V. to watch the New Orleans Saints vs. the Minnesota Vikings in the season opener, then read on for more details below.

Restaurant Week (New Orleans, all week)

One could argue that every week is Restaurant Week in New Orleans, but right now, they’d be right. During Restaurant Week, selected local establishments offer two-course lunches and three-course dinners arranged prix fixe. Old school establishments like Arnaud's and Commander's Palace make the cut, as do newer faves Bayona, Cane & Table, Domenica, and La Petite Grocery. Check out the full list of restaurants here

Mayoral Forum (Carver Theater, 6:30PM)

Music is vital to the lifeblood of New Orleans. In the midst of a contentious race for the city's top office, major mayoral candidates will gather to discuss how to nurture, protect, and empower musicians in the community. The forum is free and open to the public, and will feature panelists from the professional music industry. If you cannot attend tonight's forum, it will be livestreamed on WWOZ's website.

Modest Mouse (Civic Theatre, 8PM)

Modest Mouse has come a long way in the last 25 years. Since the band's beginnings in Seattle suburbs in 1992, to their mainstress success in the early 2000s, to their self-imposed hiatus and many lineup changes, they have lived many lives this past quarter-century. Now, the alt rockers are celebrating this milestone achievement with a new tour. Catch them tonight, featuring Mass Gothic in support.

Instant Opus (Hi-Ho Lounge, 10PM)

Instant Opus is a 100% completely improvised music series held at the Hi-Ho Lounge every Monday night. This week features drummer Simon Berz, Steve Marquette on guitar, saxophonist Brad Walker, and bassist Jesse Morrow.
