Paying Tribute

Jazz Fest brings the top tier of the music world to the Crescent City. However, many of the big acts don’t even play at the Fair Grounds. Night shows featuring The Roots and an all-star tribute to The Band’s legendary “The Last Waltz” concert were announced today.

Warren Haynes, John Medeski, Jamey Johnson, George Porter Jr., Dave Malone, Don Was, Terrence Higgins, and Mark Mullins will team up to honor the 40th anniversary of “The Last Waltz.” Waltz was the famed last concert of the band, forever preserved on celluloid by Martin Scorcese.

The original 41 sing performance included horn arrangements by Allen Toussaint which will be replicated during the forthcoming show. Likewise, a parade of special guests helped forever immortalize the night 1976, a feat organizers promise to replicate with their own set of stars sitting in.

The gig is scheduled for April 30th at the Sanger Theatre.

The Roots are also planning a special performance during Jazz Fest time. On April 29th, they are playing a tribute show to late New Orleans saxophonist Clarence “Trixie” Slaughter at The Orpheum.
