fter New Orleanians finish the preparations for Mardi Gras Day, the celebrations return on Lundi Gras night. Founded in 1882, Proteus retains its spot as the second-oldest parading krewe in all of Carnival. Many of the float chassis that were used in the krewe's early parades are still in use today. King Proteus' identity remains a secret to the public, but he is immediately recognizable by the passing of his iconic shell float.

Krewe of Orpheus (Uptown-St. Charles route, 6:00 p.m.)

Following Proteus is the main attraction and New Orleans’ youngest super krewe, Orpheus, at 6 p.m.

Nathan Fillion will reign over Orpheus in 2016. If the name does not ring a bell, Fillion is the star of ABC’s “Castle” where he plays a novelist who also solves mysteries. (Think a po-mo Angela Lansbury). His paramour, Krista Allen, star of CW’s “Significant Mother” will join him on the Monarch’s float.

This year, Orpheus boasts a 40 float caravan, 30 marching bands, and over 1,300 krewe members parading under the theme The Wizard’s Bestiary.

Chevy Metal (the side project of the Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins) will headline the ball a.k.a. Orpheucapade at the Convention Center. Chevy Metal is best described by their official bio which explains that they are a “70’s rock cover band known for playing deep cuts off albums such as Van Halen, Queen, and Bryan Adams.”

Gretna native and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” champion, Bianca Del Rio will MC the event. Orpheus co-founder and favorite son, Harry Connick Jr. will also be making at an appearance at both the parade and the party.

In 1993, Connick Jr. started Orpheus along with his father, former Orleans Parish DA, Harry Connick Sr. and Captain Sonny Borey. The trio strove to create an inclusive krewe themed around music (and a massive parade).
