A belated celebration for Banned Books Week is slated for tonight at the AllWays Lounge (St. Claude Avenue). And it’s going to be erotic. Esoterotica is revolving cast of local New Orleans writers that puts on sensual shows at the venue every other Wednesday night. Writers will read excerpts from original erotica complete with slam like performances. In lieu of admission, guests are encourage to donate what they can to Nola for Life programs benefitting Adult Literacy.
“It’s a performance,” said Esoterotica organizer and writer Aime SansSavant. “It’s not just somebody standing up and reading out of a book. It’s either memorized or performed poetry.”
The provocateurs’ readings will range from vanilla to the very sensual and graphic. Every show is different.
It’s not all slam. There will be pauses for laugher, mentioned SansSavant, who scheduled the spicy event around the dates Banned Books Weeks is usually celebrated. As it turns out, it was a week earlier this year. At least they can “keep the celebration going,” said SanSavant, and pay proper respect to “the legitimate literary form that is sexy and sensual writing.”
Esoterotica started producing shows regularly at the AllWays Lounge in the fall of 2011. They’ve done a couple spin offs for Pride and Decadence and do about four benefits per year.
Nola for Life was created by Mayor Mitch Landrieu to support local community groups and efforts. All proceeds will go to support Adult and Digital Literacy in and around New Orleans.
“It goes across the city,” added SansSavant. “It stays local. They’ve got hands on the streets working with people in our neighborhoods.”
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the scintillating show kicks off at 8 p.m. For more details, visit the Facebook Event Page: Esoterotica Makes Love to Literature for a Belated Banned Books Week Show & Benefit for Adult Literacy.
