New Orleans is known for putting our own spin on national holidays, and May the Fourth is no exception. The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus is hibernating for the summer, but New Orleans’ greater Star Wars community is stepping up. In honor of May the 4th, comic book stores are dropping prices, and nerds everywhere can find discount dog toys, light saber demonstrations, and other swag.
A play on the iconic movie catchphrase "May the Force Be with You," late Prime Minister Maggie Thatcher is to thank for the international Star Wars holiday. On May 4, 1979, the Iron Lady’s campaign team released an ad that read, “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.” Thatcher had just been elected.
Now on its 26th year, May the Fourth is a sacred time for nerds around the world, and a widely recognized Star Wars holiday. Mickey Henahan at More Funs Comics (8200 Oak St.) is celebrating the occasion with a sale.
“It’s 10 percent off of all Star Wars items unless it’s directly contradicted by Episode VII,” said Henahan. “All the stuff that takes place after Return of the Jedi is 15 percent off,” he said. “So basically an extra 5 percent if it’s going to be obsolete next year.”
Henahan quickly corrected himself. “Well they won’t be obsolete because all stories are false, so they can’t ever not be true,” said Henahan. Verity aside, the discount still applies.
Other than the sale, Henahan will also be playing Star Wars music inside of the Riverbend store.
Crescent City Comics’ (4916 Freret St.) sale from yesterday is carrying over to Sunday, so they are selling Star Wars merchandise at 10 percent off as well.
The Disney Store (Lakeside Mall, 3301 Veterans Blvd.) is getting on board. The first 100 people who arrived got a May the 4th pen, but they are sold out, an employee told NoDef. They have a light saber demonstration at 2:30 p.m., and they are selling limited edition Storm Trooper toys.
Cosmically inclined canines can get their May the 4th outfits at Petco (5300 Tchoupitoulas St.). The store has new toys and apparel in this week. There are giant-head Hans Solo and Princess Leia plush toys, as well as harnesses with Chewbacca on them.
