Write End: Saints Reportedly Ink Deal to Trade Graham

Jimmy Graham became an instant hero in da Dome. Drew Brees’ favorite target thrilled WhoDats with his goalpost dunks and gaudy numbers. Then he became the source of controversy with contract arbitration, goalpost dunks, and not so gaudy numbers. Now, ESPN is reporting that a trade to Seattle will end Graham’s Saints days.

The Jay Glazer article reports that Graham will be traded for center Max Unger and several draft picks including a first rounder.

After a massive contract battle during which Graham claimed that he should be paid as tight end, he signed a four year, $40 million contract with the Saints to start the 2014 season. The deal made Graham the highest paid tight end in the NFL. Still that season was a disappointment, plagued by injury, he posted only 889 yards on 85 receptions with ten touchdowns.

Graham also received extra media attention for his signature slam dunk through the crossbars. However, the practice suffered a fatal blow after Graham damaged the Georgia Dome uprights on a dunk against the Falcons in November 2013. The NFL enacted a rule specifically against the practice. Graham tested their leniency, dunking a few in the offseason. In response, he was fined by the league and suffered the rage of Coach Payton.
