Windsor Court Fetes Elizabeth With $90,000 Dessert


Across the pond, Queen Elizabeth II turned 90 today (4.21). While madmen and Englishmen are elated about the royal celebration, in NOLA most locals are focused on a different type of jubilee over at the Fair Grounds. But, the folks at the Windsor Court Hotel (300 Gravier Street) are offering some specials in homage to their trans-Atlantic namesake including a 90,000 dollar dessert.

 

Yes, that is 90,000 dollars. The Windsor describes pricey pastry as “a dark chocolate fondant cake encrusted with edible 24K gold and topped with a luscious Cristal champagne sauce infused with raspberries and passion fruit. The decadent dessert is then garnished with gold-dusted berries and a golden-chocolate crunch. The centerpiece of this masterful confection from Pastry Chef Shun Li is a 3.95-Carat Ruby and Diamond Ring from M.S. Rau Antiques.”

 

The pastry chef said that the jewelry provided much of the inspiration. (We’re guessing that it also accounts for much the price). “When I first saw the ring, I was immediately impressed and wanted to create a dessert that would complement its stunning beauty,” explained Li. “I knew that a chocolate cake draped in gold would serve to accentuate the brilliant red of the gemstone, truly making it a dazzling dessert well-suited for royalty.”

 

Kent Westmoreland, head mixologist at Cocktail Bar at Windsor Court, is also offering a more affordable means to toast Her Highness. He created a riff on the queen’s regular lunchtime cocktail featuring gin, Dubonnet, Maraschino juice, orange and Angostura bitters, and orange peel garnish.

 

If you’re a tourist whose hometown is not honoring the Queen, the friendly folks at the Windsor are offering some packages to come to NOLA and celebrate. Packages ranging from 2,779 to 119,260 dollars are available, complete with spa days and full luxury accommodations.
