Willie Roaf Enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of FameFor Willie Roaf, it was Hall of Fame and bust on Saturday night. The former Saints offensive lineman was officially enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, as a statue of his likeness was unveiled to go along with the honorary gold coat he received Friday night. In becoming the second Saints player to stand alongside football greats in the Hall, the 42-year-old was humble in his acceptance speech, acknowledging that offensive lineman aren't usually the ones in the spotlight.
"I didn't get singled out in front of a large audience very often, and when I did, it was usually by a referee who was singling me out by saying, "Holding number 77." That's not going to happen today. And it wasn't too often when I played," he told the crowd.
The entire Saints team was in the house. They play the Arizona Cardinals in the opening preseason game of the season tonight at 7 p.m. in Canton.
Roaf, who was drafted by the Saints in the first round in 1993 and played in New Orleans for nine years, started playing football in Pine Bluff, Ark., for the neighborhood mailman who doubled as the coach. Roaf reflected on his days there, even recalling getting beaten in a semifinal game. He went to college at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, where he said he "grew up a lot."
The 11-time Pro Bowler who was named to the NFL's All Decade Team in the 90s and 00's said he misses the competition in the NFL.
"What I do miss is the one on one battles in the trenches," said Roaf, who weighed in around 300 pounds during his playing days. "The game within the game. I loved having to go out there and compete against the best."
Throughout the speeech, Roaf repeatedly said he never thought he would be in the Hall of Fame.
"To know that my bronze bust will be in the Hall of Fame forever is just unbelievable," he said. |
