WhoDat Said They Gonna Change Dat King Cake?by Shay Sokol A Marigny coffee shop with a very loyal following is trying its hand at King Cakes this year. Who Dat Coffee Café on the corner of Mandeville and Burgundy Streets is serving personal-sized mini and whole plain-cinnamon King Cakes for the first time with simply good results.
Originally from Delcambre, LA, co-owner Craig Nero has lived in New Orleans on and off for 18 years. Nero explained that as a child, his grandmother, like many Louisiana women, would bake cinnamon rolls year-round. Around Mardi Gras, she would decorate them with purple, green and gold icing. Craig Nero is not trying to serve King Cakes as we’ve come to know them in the Randazzo’s sense, but is trying to create a King Cake of his childhood.
“Instead of evolving into the 5,000-calorie dessert, like the elaborate ones, the braided, the big ones, the stuffed ones with Bavarian cream, we just do original like grandma. Sometimes simple is just better,” Nero said.
David Ysaguire is the baker behind the king cakes. His company, Dat's Good, is ran out of Nero's cafe.
When asked what Nero thinks King Cakes are about, he said he believes they became a holiday treat as “a last ditch attempt to have your sweets before Lent.”
But he doesn’t think King Cakes are about how sweet they are. For those susceptible to sugar shock that accompanies the standard Mardi Gras fare, the icing on Who Dat’s King Cakes is refreshingly not as sweet as most other King Cakes.
NoDef tried the personal King Cakes, which look like cinnamon rolls with purple, green, and gold powder-sugar icing. Nero said the personal ones are “a comfort food to be enjoyed with a glass of milk or coffee.” The personal King Cakes can be ordered at the counter during all open hours, while the whole King Cakes must be ordered 24 hours in advance.
The icing supplies the moistness, as opposed to a moist filling inside like most elaborate King Cakes these days, (see: Cake Café’s apple and goat cheese King Cake). The inside of Who Dat’s King Cakes have the consistency and taste of homemade cinnamon rolls.
Who Dat will open a new location in Old Town, Slidell on June 1, which also happens to be the birthday of Nero's late father.
Who Dat Coffee Café is on 2401 Burgundy Street, and serves personal- and whole-sized plain-cinnamon King Cakes. ’)
