Voodoo 2012: Friday's Electronic Music Lineup

In addition to all the rock, metal, hip-hop and Lousiana music on the mainstage, the Voodoo Music Experience offers a unique look at the electronic music scene. The Le Plur stage features some of the biggest names in dubstep, EDM and much more. Jillian Firnhaber previews what's on the stage today:

Kaskade 8:30PM
A former BYU student, and native of Chicago, Kaskade seems an unlikely candidate for an international DJ known for his smooth, sexy mixes. His most recent efforts feature ethereal female vocals prominently, all backed by heavy, 80's inspired beats. A master collaborator he's seen success with "Only You," a partnership with electronic demi-god Tiesto, and #1 hit "Move For Me" in which he worked with Deadmau5 completely via instant messenger. Also known for his remixes of pop icons such as Beyonce and Katy Perry, Kaskade's catchy tunes make it hard to believe he's never tasted alcohol or done drugs in his life. His set promises to walk the fine line between calming and energizing.

JFK of MSTRKRFT 7:00PM

Pronounced "mastercraft", Jesse F. Keeler, one half of the Canadian duo will be joining us in the electronic tent on Friday night. MSTRKRFT evokes another famous duo: Daft Punk with their catchy beats. Best known for their remix of John Legend's "Heartbreaker." Their electronic music is anything but boring, and heavily samples party rap that will make you want to violently gyrate. "Bounce, feat. N.O.R.E & Isis" will make you (and we say this in the best possible way) feel like fist-bumping a la Jersey Shore as you shout along to the lyrics of "all I do is party." This may possibly be the bestelectronic anthem for New Orleans.

Die Antwoord 5:45PM

When Die Antwoord is mentioned around the NoDef water cooler, three of us simultaneously mutter one word: creepy. Their unsettling videos for "Enter the Ninja" and "I Fink u Freeky" have gone viral - providing a visual component that adds to their unique brand of synthetic hip-hop. Coming all the way from South Africa, the duo represents the Zef movement, the somewhat trashy, lower-middle-class white subculture popular in Cape Town. They blend the fairly mainstream South African hip-hop sounds with Mortal Kombat-esque electro-beats, and a heavy dose of performance art. We definitely "fink them freeky" and can't wait to see what we're sure will be a bizarre performance.

Nervo 4:30PM

Female electronic music DJs are few and far between, and Nervo has two of them. Better known in their native Australia as The Nervo Twins, the two beauties wrote Grammy winning single "When Love Takes Over" for David Guetta. Since then they've left modeling in the dust to focus on their poppy, female-centric tunes. Songs like "You're Gonna Love Again" and "The Way We See the World" sound like the perfect summer tunes for sorority girls to blast on the way to a wild weekend Floribama. Their upbeat music is sure to put a smile on your face, and if you get bored you can always watch the gorgeous blondes spinning the tracks.

Beverly Skillz 3:15PM

Although not known for it's electronic music scene, Beverly Skillz is making a local name for herself, spinning hilarious tracks at local events such as Ampersand's glow-paint party. She seems to take a cue from Dr. Dre that slower is better, and DJs with minimal pretention. Come support a local on Voodoo's stage and check out the talented Ms. Skillz.

Force Feed Radio 12PM

Another New Orleans talent will hit the stage, playing their funkily mixed world music that blends Indian sitars and chanting with classic beats. Force Feed Radio will take the stage for over three hours, so stop by for the festival's first trip down the electronic lane.
