UNO Joins Southland Conference

There's been a lot of changes at the University of  New Orleans lately, but the Privateer diaspora can take comfort today in the fact that Pierre the Pirate and Lafitte the InstiGator are staying in the Southland. UNO announced they're joining the Southland Conference for athletics, effective for the 2013 fall season.

While the Division I school doesn't have football, UNO's basketball, soccer, track, tennis and golf teams on the men's and women's side will take on the likes of Stephen F. Austin, Oral Roberts and Lamar. Competition is already heating up for UNO's newest in-conference rivalry with Southland Louisiana schools like McNeese State, Northwestern State and Nicholls State, as well as nearby Southeastern Louisiana.

UNO hopes membership in the Southland cleans up most of the athletic mess it made upon leaving the Sun Belt Conference in 2010. Around that time, the school announced it was leaving Division I, but upon taking the reigns new President Peter Fos said the lakefront school would remain a player in college athletics' highest level of competition.

In addition to upping the ante on the playing field, UNO President Peter Fos said membership in the Southland would "increase the visibility of the UNO brand in areas where we already have a large alumni base as well as other communities where we hope to increase our recruiting efforts.”

The move is effective July 1, 2013.
