Tropical Update: TS Gabrielle Reforms, New Low in Gulf

With Humberto's formation on Monday, Tropical Storm Gabrielle decided she wasn't ready to sink to the bottom of the alphabet soup. According to the National Hurricane Center, Gabrielle reformed east of Bermuda, giving weather watchers two Atlantic Ocean storms to track. Meanwhile, a low pressure area in the Gulf of Mexico could develop into something stormier over the next five days.

Tropical Storm Gabrielle was a remnant low drifting aimlessly in toward the Caribbean. But she got organized again. She has maximum winds of 40 mph, and is pushing north at 14 mph. That likely means she won't cause any problems for Louisiana. Within five days, she is expected to be off the East Coast of the U.S. But that time, she'll likely be downgraded back to a low.

Further out in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Humberto is continuing his westward trek off the Cape Verde Islands. Maximum winds have increased to 65 mph, putting him in range of hurricane status. National Hurricane Center forecasters thought they saw an eye overnight, but it was opened back up by morning. He is still forecast to reach hurricane strength later on Tuesday while pushing north, before turning to the west and weakening back to a tropical storm. Humberto remains far from land, with its path beyond five days unknown.

In the Gulf of Mexico, another disturbance is attracting attention. The low pressure area is hovering east of the Yucatan Peninsula, and is forecast to move west across the Mexican area to the Bay of Campeche by Thursday. Currently, the chances of the system developing into a storm are only 10 percent. But once out in the Bay, development becomes more likely. The system has a 60 percent chance of depression over the next five days.
