Tropical Storm Isaac Looms Off Louisiana Coast

Tropical Storm Isaac is within 24 hours of making landfall, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm continues to hover just below hurricane strength, moving Northwest at about 10 mph. It is currently located 165 miles South of New Orleans. The system once again "wobbled westward" overnight but that motion is believed to be temporary. While strengthening to a hurricane has still yet to occur, the system remains on track to hit the South Louisiana coast as a Category 1 hurricane. The storm is expected to slow down once it reaches land, which could lead to a prolonged period of almost 24 hours of rain and wind over New Orleans.

Despite the slow development, the storm continues some strengthening. Signs of an inner core development were evident when an Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft flew near the storm last night.

The track appears more certain now, as the hurricane warning was reduced to a tropical storm warning from Cameron, La. to Morgan City, La., and the Alabama-Mississippi border to Destin, Fla. The area between those two zones remains under hurricane warning.
