Tropical Update: New Low off Mexico

With Ingrid just having drifted off into the mountains, a new weather disturbance near the Mexican coast has weather watchers getting the Hurricane Hunter plane ready. The low pressure system, which is lurking just off the west coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, is headed toward the Gulf, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The system is sitting in a pocket that has been ripe for low pressure development during the 2013 hurricane season. It is expected to move over the Yucatan Peninsula, the cross into the Bay of Campeche and southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

Once it reaches the other side of the peninsula, there is a high chance the low will become a tropical cyclone, according to NHC forecaster Jack Beven. Currently, the system has a 70 percent chance of going tropical in the next two days, and an 80 percent chance over the next five days, Beven writes.

Out in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Humberto continues to drift northeast. The trip away from land has Humberto teetering on the brink of depression, but NHC forecaster Robbie Berg is not ready to change the perscription just yet. Maximum winds of 40 mph and a difficult-to-locate center are calling storm status into question, bu the official forecast doesn't show a downgrade for four days.

The storm is still forecast to have no impact on any U.S. shoreline, pushing further in the opposite direction of the East Coast over the next five days.
