Today's Events: 9.1.11

August rolls into September with a Treme writer presenting his new novel, pre-Decadence poetry and performance in the Quarter and a twilight concert in City Park. On this day in Louisiana history, Aaron Burr was acquitted on conspiracy and treason charges in 1807. He was accused of plotting to annex parts of the Louisiana territory to create a new Republic. Even though he was acquitted, he quickly took a European trip, as public opinion had already turned against him. Check out the details on Today's happenings:

6:00 p.m. George Pelicanos presents The Cut - Pelicanos is a writer for HBO's Treme, but he can also handle long-form works. His new crime novel, The Cut, traces a man's return from Iraq into the field of recovering stolen property and, eventually, work for the mob. (Octavia Books)

6:00 p.m. Ogden After Hours - Seth Walker brings his Appalachia-tinged blues to the museum's weekly soiree. (Ogden Museum)

6:00 p.m. Thursdays at Twilight - Piano man Philip Melancon steps outside for a soul-filled sundown at the Pavillion of the Two Sister (City Park)

7:00 p.m. SAINTS preseason v. Titans - Pre-dat is still Who Dat. This game will probably feature even less starters than the first three, but it's still football. (Superdome)

7:00 p.m. 17 Poets Literary and Performance Series Fall Opening - The French Quarter poetry night keeps the spirit of the sonnet (and other forms) alive. Tonight, they open the season with a discussion among current working New Orleans poets, and an exhibition of dozens of original New Orleans literary publications (Gold Mine Saloon)

*And the weekly Thursday throwdowns: Stooges at Hi-Ho, Soul Rebels at Les Bon Temps, Kermit at Vaughns, and Alex McMurray at Saturn Bar.
