Defender Picks

Today's Events: 4/15/11

April 15, the day GE formed (1892), when the Titanic sunk (1912), when Bergen-Belson was liberated (1945), when Jackie Robinson broke the baseball color line and debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1947), when Leonardo da Vinci (1452) and Henry James (1990) were born, and when Greta Garbo (1990) and Joey Ramone (2001) passed. Now here’s some history in the making:

The Ashe Cultural Arts Center on Oretha Castle Haley presents The Vagina Monologues, a two-night run of Eve Ensler’s epic one-woman show, now often reproduced as a full cast experience, with each member starring in individual vignettes. The show’s at 7 p.m. and costs $15 ($10 for students and seniors). An hour later, Goat in the Road Productions brings you a two-man show at the Trouser House on St. Claude. "Our Man" has the Jim Fitzmorris thumbs up. Need we say more?

Tunes-wise: Here in New Orleans, musicians draw a lot of inspiration inside the gates, but they must look outward every now again. Tonight, Derrick Freeman's Smoker's World does just that by paying tribute to Long Beach, CA's own late, great Nate Dogg. Freeman, who was undoubtedly reared here under a Batiste and a Marsalis, will make offerings to the man who guested on Warren G's "Regulate" and The Chronic (hmm..sensing a theme). The jams will go up in smoke at Tipitina's around 10 p.m.

Over at Oak, Andrew Duhon (known to play with the likes of Ms. Kristin Diable) will soul it up for a set or two, while Big History (a Nodef Nodder) will rock out at Republic. Decisions, matter what you do at 10pm, Boogie Nights is playing a midnight show at the Prytania…see you there.
