Today's Events: 2.28.12Today, Helen Gillet, Tatsuya Nakatani, and Rob Cambre perform at the Mudlark Theatre, and The Interrupters screens at Ashe Cultural Arts Center. On this day in Louisiana history, Louis Armstrong was presented with a key to the city on Lundi Gras morning (1949), Wynton Marsalis became the first person to win Grammy awards in both jazz and classical categories (1984), and Gov. Edwin Edwards was indicted by the federal grand jury on 51 counts of racketeering for the first time (1985). Here’s how you can get into trouble of your own:
6:30PM: The Interrupters- Steve James, editor, director, cinematographer, and producer of this 2011 documentary, tells the story of three violence interrupters working as part of the violence intervention program CeaseFire to protect their communities in the city of Chicago. Ceasefire is scheduled to come to New Orleans in the coming months. For his part, James is known for his previous successes Hoop Dreams and There Are No Children Here, and this newest work premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival with positive reviews. Tonight, the Ashe Cultural Arts Center screens the film for free (Ashe Cultural Arts Center)
8:00PM: Helen Gillet, Tatsuya Nakatani, and Rob Cambre- It’s a night of improv with three talented musicians bringing a range of sound to this DIY venue in the Bywater. Nakatani will be on his gong, along with other exotic instruments of his choice. Meanwhile, Helen Gillet will play her one and only (cello), with effects, and Rob Cambre on his six strings. Expect a night of melodic jamming in an intimate setting, and to donate the suggested $5 (Mudlark Theatre)
