Today's Events: 2.18.12

Today Mardi Gras parades are shifting due to rain, but the show must go on. Even if Endymion doesn't roll, there's plenty happening tonight as, Better Than Ezra plays the House of Blues, Galactic plays Tips, and Spellcaster’s Maritime Ball goes down with Quintron at his Spellcaster Lodge. Most important, NOLA’s Soul Queen Irma Thomas was born on this day in Ponchatoula, LA back in 1941. Back to today:

11:00AM: AMC Best Picture Showcase- Nine films are nominated for the 2012 Academy Award for Best Picture, This morning, AMC screens four of the nine for your own review: 'War Horse', 'Moneyball', 'The Tree of Life' and 'The Descendants' can be seen in Elmwood, so catch dem flicks before you catch dem beads (AMC Elmwood Palace 20)

8:00PM: Better Than Ezra’s 2nd Annual Krewe of Rocckus- The boys are back in town for night two of their stint at HOB to rock Mardi Gras, this time with Big Sam to blast his horn. Rumor has it that BTA will play their second album Friction Baby in its entirety, so if you’ve got the dough ($35) and are of age (18+), come on down (House of Blues)

9:00 PM Morning 40 Federation - Another band that plays less frequently in New Orleans these days pulls it back together for Mardi Gras. The Morning 40s' potent blend of rock, funk and cabaret made them heroes in downtown New Orleans. Tonight, they're poised to prove their lot all over again. Local R&B roysterers King James and the Special Men letta have it beforehand. (One Eyed Jack's)

10:00PM: Galactic- Local and National heros are known to pop back home for the biggest party weekends, whether it’s Halloween, Jazz Fest, or Carnival. So here they are, armed with a new album at their favorite Uptown home to play a funky Mardi Gras set, or three. Corey Glover, Corey Henry, MyNameisJohnMichael, and more join in for the fun; $30 (Tipitina's)

10:00PM: Spellcaster’s Maritime Ball- It’s not every day that Quintron and Miss Pussycat open their St. Claude doors to the public, but when in Rome, aka during Carnival…it’s always a ruckus at the lodge, especially when Blood Shot Bill is in town. The one man Canadian rockabilly wrecking crew is also known for teaming up with King Khan, who together go by Tandoori Knights; tonight, However, Bill plays solo (unless surprises are in the mix) and Quintron takes his homemade stage as well (Spellcaster Lodge)

10:00 PM Big Sam's Masquerade Ball - Big Sam's birthday bash and annual Mardi Gras party. Head down to Frenchmen for one of the funkiest Mardi Gras parties in downtown New Orleans. (Blue Nile)

*And the weekly Saturday specials: FNOPL Book Sale at Latter Library Carriage House, Westwego Farmers & Fisheries Market at 484 Sala Ave, and the Sankofa Farmers Market.
