Today's Events: 12.8.11

Today, Romeo and Juliet premieres at NOMA, Black Christmas screens at the Alamo Underground, and BOUNCE XI gets asses in the air at the Republic. Also on this day, John Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman (1980), Bill Clinton signed the North American Free Trade Agreement (1993) into law, The Grateful Dead announced they were breaking up after 30 years of bear dancing (1995), Sammy Davis Jr. (1925) and Diego Rivera (1886) were born, and Golda Meir died (1978). Now back to the present:

7:30PM: Romeo and Juliet- Straight off the success of  ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in NOMA’s Sculpture Garden, The NOLA Project partners again with the museum to present the classic Shakespearean star-crossed love tale. James Bartelle directs a large cast of twenty for a small (but participatory) audience in NOMA’s Great Hall. Buy tickets in advance for productions on12/10, 12/11, & 12/15, 12/17, 12/18 (NOMA)

9:00PM: Black Christmas- Just when you thought Canada was a peaceful place, the Alamo Underground reminds you of this Northern North American Slasher film from 1974. True, the New York Times gave it a 1 out of 5 at the time, but this cult classic inspired slasher films for decades to come, from Friday the 13th to Halloween. So if you’re into sorority blood baths without the gore, this one’s for you (Alamo Underground)

10:00PM: BOUNCE XI- Prepare for a massive lineup of Bounce and Hip Hop, with performances from Partners N Crime [PNC], 5th Ward Weebie, Choppa, DJ Jubilee, Mr. Ghetto, 10th Ward Buck, and Rusty Lazer. Tonight also sees the birthdays of both members of PNC, so expect a cake break around 1AM! $10 gets you in ($8 with a student ID), but no amount permits entry if you haven’t made $18. Rock the [Republic] boat (Republic)

*And the weekly Thursday threshold: Stooges at Hi-Ho, Soul Rebels at Les Bon Temps, Kermit at Vaughns, and Alex McMurray at Saturn Bar.
