Today in New Orleans: 8.24.12

Today, come out and make more SEC history at the Crescent City Kickoff Party, check out the “Sexy Summer Show,” along with some boxing on Freret Street. or get funky with Kirk Joseph at Tip's On this day in Louisiana history, a U.S. Appelate Court ruled against segregation for Louisiana State University’s undergraduate classes (1955). Now for all of today's nitty-gritty:

Muses Summer Dance Party (Republic, 8:00 PM) Come dance with the Muses like it was 2011 all over again. Twenty dollars earns two drinks and all the getting down your feet can manage. All proceeds benefit Eden House, which works with former prostitutes to help them find a different way of making ends meet.

Crescent City SEC Kickoff Party (Fulton on Tap, 8pm) Come out in your team’s colors to hang with fellow SEC fans. They’ll have drink specials from Abita and Jack Daniel’s, plus music from 61 South. Admission is $20 ahead of time and $30 at the door, and a portion of all proceeds goes towards Playworks, a NOLA nonprofit that provides low-income children with athletic programs in their schools.

Friday Night Fights (Freret St. 7pm) Tonight’s “Sexy Summer Show” opens up with the Reggae band Higher Heights. Tickets are $20 at the door, but girls get in free if they show up in complete bikinis, and boys get in free if they wear “banana hammocks.”

Kirk Joseph’s Backyard Groove, Naughty Professor (Tipitina’s, 10pm) Come out and see the local favorite at Tip’s on Napoleon and Tchoupitoulas, with Joseph mixing“sousa-funk,” with his modern, New Orleans brass sound.

Corey Henry and the Treme Funktet (Hi Ho Lounge, 10pm) The Treme natives are taking their sound to the Marigny tonight, bringing brass to St. Claude. Trombonist Henry only started up the band a little over a year ago, but they’re no strangers to the local music scene.
