Today's Events 8.12.12

This Sunday, put on your beret and check out the French Film Festival at the Prytania, then catch some more French-inspired music with Bruce Daigrepont’s Fais Do Do at Tip’s. Later on, Eletronica fans can make a stop at One Eyed Jack’s for “The Drive Tour,” and bass heads can worship at the Dragon’s Den for Bass Church. Today in our state’s history, Professor Longhair’s single “Bald Head,” entered the R&B charts in 1950, and the late R&B singer Percy Mayfield was born in Minden, Louisiana.

French Film Fest (Prytania Theater)

The New Orleans Film Society presents the fest, which includes classic and contemporary French films and runs for an entire week. Sponsored in part by the Consulat General de France a la Nouvelle-Orleans, the festival brings all genres of French film and invites Francophiles and novices alike to come enjoy the subtitles.

The Drive Tour (One Eyed Jacks, 10pm)

The soundtrack for the movie Drive made such an impact on audiences, that Indie Electronica Bands College, Anoraak, and Electric Youth (all featured on the soundtrack) decided to come together for a tour. They’ll be performing stuff from the movie as well as some original tracks.

Cajun Fais Do Do (Tipitina’s Uptown, 5:30pm)

The Bruce Daigrepont Cajun Band goes on this evening for Tip’s weekly fais do do round up. Daigrepont comes complete with a fiddle, accordion, and rhythm section, and his sound blends the French sound of La Nouvelle Orleans with Cajun and Zydeco influences.

Sunday Swing with Lionel Ferbos (World World II Museum, 2pm)

Local musicians provide the background music with World War II era hits while professional swing dancers train newcomers. Admission is free, and dancers of all skill levels are invited to join in the vintage fun.

Bass Church (Dragon’s Den, 10pm)

This week in dubstep, Dragonhot’s Den is bringing New-Zealand based group TRUTH, along with Gumbolt, Rus, Unicorn Fukr, and Mr. Cool Bad Guy to drop the beats. Cover is $10.

Hot 8 Brass Band (Howlin’ Wolf, 10pm)

Start off your week with the Hot 8 at the Howlin’ Wolf for $10. The local octet brings influences from funk, jazz, hip hop into their unique sound, and they’re there for their weekly gig every Sunday night.
