Today in NOLA 9.9.17

This Saturday, celebrate the great Mississippi at the Downriver Festival. Intramural Productions stages a play by Patti Smith and Sam Shepard. The Ogden hosts a curatorial talk, while Grow On hosts an artists showcase. Today marks the 50th anniversary of the New Orleans Saints first game in NOLA, beginning the longstanding rivalry against the Atlanta Falcons. Now, more to do today.

Downriver Festival (New Orleans Jazz Museum, all day)

Celebrate the great Mississippi River at an all day festival at the Old U.S. Mint highlighting the long-standing cultural, economic, environmental, and inspirational impacts on New Orleans. Snack on the foods of the summer — shrimp and sno-balls — or visit vendors serving up crepes, tacos, fries, pralines, and more. Acts like Soul Brass Band, Wendell Brunious, Bookoo Reuda, Sunpie & Louisiana Sunspots will take the stage. For the more scholastically-minded, learn about the impact of the river with lectures highlighting coastal awareness, plus NOLA culture like shrimp commerce, colorful houses, and sno-balls.

Gallery Talk (The Ogden, 3PM)

The Ogden’s Curator of Photography Richard McCabe discusses two of the museum’s photo exhibitions. William Eggleston: Troubled Waters, from the Collection of William Greiner highlights rural life in the Mississippi Delta. Further explore the colorful Southern landscape with the vibrant photography of The Colourful South, from the Collection of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.

Cowboy Mouth (Frenchmen Hotel, 5PM)

Intramural Productions (the folks behind Chet’s Summer Vacation) presents a 1971 play by Sam Shepard and Patti Smith. Directed by Bennett Kirschner, Cowboy Mouth is “a portrait of two fantastic freaks” Slim and Cavale, aspiring rockstars in an quasi-kidnapping scenario discussing poetry, beauty, and the American Dream.

Second Saturday (Grow On, 6PM)

Grow On hosts their monthly event highlighting their permaculture center plus local art. The artist showcase features visual art by Lauren Miller, and performances by Righteous Wrong and Kathryn Rose Wood. Snack on Japanese street food by Street Fixe.
