Today in NOLA 9.8.17

Kick off your weekend with a selection of fests, parties, happy hours, and more. Saint Claude Social Club celebrates their anniversary. Friday Nights at NOMA will present new art and a film screening, plus live music. Sample the best bites in the south at the Chefs Taste Challenge, or get down to Stephanie Mills and Deniece Williams at Jazz in the Park Burger Fest. On this day in 1967, Jefferson Parish Councilman Vial J. Blanke was implicated in Life Magazine as an ally of Joseph Armenio, described by the magazine as "a convicted murderer" and an associate of Carlos Marcello, leader of the New Orleans crime family. Now, more to do this Friday.

Friday Nights at NOMA (NOMA, 5PM)

Take in a little culture before getting housed tonight. NOMA opens its doors after hours on Fridays, allowing visitors a chance to kick off the weekend with some live music and film. This week will feature indie folk-pop duo Renshaw Davies and a screening of the Orson Welles documentary F is for Fake. Rounding out the night's festivities is a tour of new works at the museum, led by Curatorial Fellow Brian Piper.

Anniversary Party (Saint Claude Social Club, 6PM)

Celebrate the one year anniversary of the Saint Claude Social Club with champagne, snacks, and plenty of dancing. Seven Three Distilling Co. and Belle of the Bar will be providing the drinks, while attendees can snack on treats from La Cubana of Casa Borrega. DJ KeyBumps will be on hand to spin blues, soul, and funk vinyl. The Social Club will also use tonight as an opportunity to unveil their "magical secret courtyard" with an art pop-up featuring Chambers Austelle and Karen Ann Myers.

Chefs Taste Challenge (Convention Center, 6:30PM)

Tonight, 10 of the top chefs in the southern U.S. will go head to head to be declared the victor in a farm-to-table showdown. Repping NOLA tonight is Alex Harrell, the chef and owner of Angeline in the Quarter.

Jazz in the Park Burger Fest (Crescent Park, 7PM)

Come by Crescent Park for a coming together of two amazing things: great music and burgers. Grammy-winning superstars Stephanie Mills and Deniece Williams will take the stage as part of Jazz in the Park's newest presentation, Jazz on the Wharf Burger Fest. Also included on the lineup are DJ Slick Leo, Stephanie Jordan, and "Blowfish" the Blind Sensation of Comedy. On the food front, expect experimental riffs on the traditional burger from over a dozen vendors, who promise to incorporate everything from pizza and pretzels to crawfish and lobsters into their menus.
