Today in NOLA 9.15.17

Looking to get your weekend started right? Friday Nights at NOMA will present new art and a film screening, plus live music. Martini Madness brings 25 varieties of martinis to City Park. DJ Soul Sister spins her tunes at One Eyed Jacks at her regular dance party, while horror themed burlesque will take over The Willow. On this day in 1699, Jean-Baptiste de Bienville tricked his competitors in a move known as the English Turn, keeping the English out of the future territory of Louisiana. Details tonight:

Friday Nights at NOMA (NOMA, 5PM)

Take in a little culture before getting housed tonight. NOMA opens its doors after hours on Fridays, allowing visitors a chance to kick off the weekend with some live music and film. This week will feature music by soul-funk outfit Smoke n Bones and a screening of the 2015 film Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People. Rounding out the night's festivities is a discussion with printmaker Teresa Cole, in conjunction with NOMA's exhibition Jim Steg; New Work

Martini Madness (Ctiy Park, 8PM)

Four hours, 25 specialty martinis — need we say more? Stop by the Arbor Room and Popp Fountain in City Park to sample over two dozen martinis from Republic National Distributing Company and snack on food from over 20 restaurants around town. All proceeds from tonight's event will benefit the restoration of the 100-year-old Popp Bandstand.

Soulful Takeover (One Eyed Jacks, 10PM)

Get down with “The Queen of Rare Groove” DJ Soul Sister for her residency at One Eyed Jacks. She may no longer hustle on a weekly basis, but the music behind Soul Sister's celebration of rare grooves remains the same.

The Blood & Glitter Burlesque Spookshow (The Willow, 10PM)

Want a little spooky with your sexy? The Society of Sin Burlesque & Variety presents an evening of classic horror for one night only. Xena Zeit-Geist produced the show, which will also feature Chère Noble, Ariana Amour, Expecta Patrone, Phoenix, Charlotte Treuse, Nikki LeVillain, Megan Watts, Remy Dee, Lune Noirr, Annie Bacterial and more.
