Today in NOLA 8.6.17

It's a glorious day as Mariah Carey and Lionel Richie come to town for a show at the arena. The Maple Leaf is hosting an epic concert to benefit a team member in need, while the Hi-Ho hosts its legendary comedy open mic. Or, develop your meditation practice at Tibetan House's one day retreat. On this day in 1974, Aunt Sally's Praline Shop, located at 314 Royal Street, was destroyed after catching fire in what many contend was a conspiracy over the property ownership. Now, more details for Sunday's events.

Exploring Stillness (Tibetan House, 11AM)

Need to clear your mind and recharge before the week ahead? Join the Tibetan House for a one day retreat into within. This beginners-friendly meditation event will explore mindfulness practitioners’ abilities to work through distractions, enter the introspective experience of the practice, and stay present for two 2-hour meditation sessions.

Mariah Carey & Lionel Richie (Smoothie King Center, 7PM)

It’s All the Hits when Lionel Richie’s tour featuring Mariah Carey rolls into the arena. Though Mimi has been accused of bringing her less than best, the tour is earning great reviews thanks to classic hits from the songstress — plus Richie’s signature engaging stage presence. The former Commodores singer is celebrating the band’s upcoming 50th anniversary with tunes from their catalogue, as well as solo hits like “Hello” and “Dancing on the Ceiling.”

NOLA Comedy Hour (Hi-Ho Lounge, 8PM)

Swing by St. Claude Ave. for the Hi-Ho’s weekly stand-up showcase, hosted by local comedians Andrew Polk and Duncan Pace. The open mic guarantees a constantly changing lineup to keep things exciting, so head in with an open mind and ready to laugh. Previous performers include local comedians and stand-up stars like Louis C.K., Hannibal Buress, and Craig Robinson.

Jammin' for Josh (Maple Leaf Bar, 8PM)

The Maple Leaf comes together in support of their own with a concert benefitting team member Joshua Abelson. Come out and support the music industry figure and see a show featuring John Paul Carmody, Rockin’ Dopsie Jr., Lynn Drury, The Hill Country Hounds, Kirk Joseph,  Meschiya Lake,  Reggie Scanlan, Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes, The Marc Stone Band, New Soul Finders! feat. Marilyn Barbarin, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, and Jeff Watkins.
