Today in NOLA 8.31.17

This Thursday, listen in to some top artists discuss street spirit, learn the basics of spell casting, watch some college football, or cool off with some free ice cream and comedy. On this day in 1819, a battle took place on the water between the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and The Bravo, a pirate ship owned by Jean Lafitte. After a gun fight, The Bravo was taken over and several pirates, including Lafitte's lieutenant Jean La Farges, were captured. Now, more to do today.

Antenna::Signals (Kermit's Treme Mother-In-Law Lounge, 6PM)

Conceived as a live arts magazine, Antenna::Signals welcomes  6-8 of the artists and writers of Antenna to host Issue 6. This installment will foster a discussion on street spirit, and what communal movement and celebration means to the arts and people of New Orleans with conversation, performances, and presentations. Sunni Patterson will emcee the event, which will include Take 'Em Down NOLA leader A Scribe Called Quess?, photojournalist Abdul Aziz, Louisiana Water Works CEO Miriam Belblidia, singer-songwriter Mykia Jovan, activist and educator Sabrina Mays-Montana, artist Dread Scott, and photographer Polo Silk.

New Orleans Saints vs. Balitmore Ravens (Superdome, 7PM)

The Saints take on the Ravens in the final preseason game of the year. Both teams are ranked at the top (Ravens at #1, Saints at #2) for defense in the NFL, so expect each side to bring their all to the Dome. With kick off for the official season just a week and a half away, this is the last chance for the boys in black & gold to make a statement about their plans to dominate this year.

Tarot Ritual & Manifestation (Rosalie Apothecary, 7PM)

Tonight, famed NOLA-based reader and practitioner Tattiana Tarot will lead a workshop through the essentials of spell casting, hoodoo, and Tarot. Students will learn basic spells and ritual work, as well as techniques for manifestation and visualization. True to her name, Tattiana will also instruct how the Tarot can be used to better direct and clarify this work.

Night Church (Sidney's Saloon, 8:30PM)

What better way to cool off on the last night of August than with some ice cream? Throw in some of the city's top stand-up talents, and the fact that scoops from New Orleans Ice Cream company are FREE, and tonight's show at Sidney's is a can't-miss event. Night Church will feature 10 minute sets from at least eight of the top stand-ups in town. D.C. based comedian Kevin Tit will headline the show.
