Today in NOLA: 8.29.14

Today, we remember Katrina, nine years later. On a lighter note, Decadence is in full swing. Here’s a new reason to take a trip to the Westbank: A$AP Ferg, Big Gigantic, Dillon Francis and more play the Mad Decent Block Party at Mardi Gras World today. Gravity A pay tribute to the Talking Heads at Tiptina’s tonight. Plus, MidCity Theatre mashes up the Bard and the Dude.

Katrina Remebrances

Nine years ago, Hurricane Katrina came whirling out of the Gulf. We are painfully familiar with the levee breaks, flooding, death, and dislocation that followed. Across the city, we pause to remember, reopen, and rejoice at some of the rebuilding.

Southern Decadence

Billed as the "Gayest Show on Earth," Southern Decadence hits his stride today. Expect feathers, boas, parades, and lots of parties at the downtown clubs. Porn stars, parties, and something called a "dick in a cup contest" are amongst the early highlights.

Mad Decent Block Party (Mardi Gras World, 2p.m.)

Remember when Diplo kinda ripped bounce music? At least his record label is throwing this sweet event, right? The 2014 Mad Decent Block Party in New Orleans features Dillon Francis, Flostradamus, RL Grime, A$AP Ferg, Big Gigantic, UZ, Kid Kamillion, and Wrestlers. It goes on all afternoon, but if you’d rather skip to the heavy hitters, Big Gigantic start at 5:10 and A$AP Ferg at 6:15. Presale tickets were $45 but the price goes up today.

Friday Nights At NOMA (NOMA, 6-8p.m.)

This evening, art historians Rebecca Lee Reynolds of UNO and Sara Hollis of SUNO speak on Hale Woodruff’s historic murals for Talladega College, a landmark in the history of both public art and African-American muralism. They’re on display now at NOMA. Plus, music all evening from Patrice Fisher and the Arpa Quartet.

Two Gentlemen of Lebowski - A Reading (MidCity Theatre, 8p.m.)

Think back to that weekend in college when you were supposed to be reading Shakespeare, but in fact, you were watching The Big Lebowski. The best thing about being an adult is not having to make these kinds of false choices. Have your White Russian and drink it too when MidCity Theatre presents this comedic reading that’s based on a classic and a cult classic, too. Methinks we can abide that. Suggested admission $10.

Foundation Free Fridays: Gravity A (Tipitina’s, 10 p.m.)

This week’s Foundation Free Fridays show features Gravity A with a tribute to the Talking Heads (so you can get ready for that Stop Making Sense screening next week). Catch them at Tipitina’s for free-ninety-nine. Bar sales benefit the Tipitina’s Foundation.

TNM Presents: The Match Game (Shadowbox Theatre, 10:30p.m.)

Is Lebowski not enough of a cultural throwback for you? Tonight, The New Movement continues their series of weekend shows at the Shadowbox with a comedic resurrection of longrunning fill-in-the-blank ‘70s game show Match Game. Tickets $8. Leisure suit optional.
