Today in NOLA 8.28.17

Today, Helen Gillet and Raphael Bas lighten up an otherwise dreary afternoon with some music in the Bacchanal backyard. Learn about astrological natal chart techniques with the New Orleans School for Esoteric Arts. Aurora Nealand plays her recurring gig on Frenchmen, while Instant Opus returns to the Hi-Ho. On this day in 1990, Mayor Sidney J. Barthelemy promoted his dive into a shark tank at the yet-to-be-opened Aquarium of the Americas. Now, more to do this Monday.

Raphael Bas & Helen Gillet (Bacchanal, 12PM)

Enjoy the sounds of New Orleans with a glass of wine in Bacchanal's famed backyard. The Bywater watering hole's resident musician Raphael Bas is known for supplying gypsy jazz sounds every afternoon Monday through Thursday. Today he is joined by cellist Helen Gillet, a local favorite known for her intriguing, intra-genre exploration and her innovative use of electronic looping. The resulting sound is simultaneously soothing and exhilarating. Although both Bas and Gillet’s respective upbringings span multiple nations, their sounds are all NOLA.

Astrology Workshop (New Orleans School for Esoteric Arts, 7PM)

Join NOLA's own School for Esoteric Arts for an in-depth course about the essentials of astrological moon cycles. Tonight's workshop is centered on techniques to improve natal chart readings, which utilizes information about your birth date, time, location, and lunar cycle to reveal information about your life. Advanced students might welcome this horoscope tune-up, but the class is targeted toward students with a basic understanding of the astrological systems.

Aurora Nealand & The Royal Roses (Maison, 7PM)

After nearly a decade in New Orleans, singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Aurora Nealand is an established and versatile voice in the city’s musical community. Nealand is also a member of Panorama Jazz Band and Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship, but The Royal Roses are her traditional jazz group. Informed by groups like the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the New Orleans Moonshiners, they bring a fresh take to the trad sound.

Instant Opus (Hi-Ho Lounge, 10PM)

Instant Opus is a 100% completely improvised music series held at the Hi-Ho Lounge every Monday night. This week features saxophonist & Magnetic Ear leader Martin Krusche kicking things off with percussionist Paul Thibodeaux and Josef Butts supplying the rhythm. Sound artist Joe Badon will make this Instant Opus an experience unlike any installment before.
