Today in NOLA 8.20.17

Today, show down with the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club in City Park. Little Gem Saloon will put on their final staging of the Pulitzer Prize nominated work Love Letters to benefit a New Orleanian in need. Explore your kinks at the Hi-Ho's BDSM-meets-burlesque show, or set your intentions in the New Moon Women's Circle at Rosalie Apothecary. On this day, bassist Julius Farmer was born on August 20, 1949. On a darker note, 269 people died of yellow fever in New Orleans on August 20, 1853, deeming the date “Black Day.” Now, more to do this Saturday.

Zulu Annual Sonny "Jim" Poole Picnic (City Park, 10AM)

Zulu's annual picnic in the park will celebrate Sonny Jim Poole, one of the creators of the krewe's legendary Mr. Big Stuff character. Venture out and compete with Zulu in relay races, coconut contest, barbeque contests, t-shirt contests and more.

New Moon Women's Circle (Rosalie Apothecary, 6PM)

This month's Women's Circle honors the new moon in Virgo and the upcoming solar eclipse. Bring a tea cup, a pen, and a journal, and prepare to meditate and create intentions with blessings, tea, and creating an altar with the circle.

Love Letters (Little Gem Saloon, 5PM)

Directed by Carl Walker, Love Letters is a play featuring Nell Nolan and Dennis Woltering. Celebrated playwright A.R. Gurney was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for the epistolary work, which explores the relationship between Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner as they trace 50 years of love, loss, friendship, marriages, and children with other people through notes and letters. Proceeds from the production will benefit the medical care account of Lucas Regnier, Nolan's nephew-in-law who was gravely injured in a bicycle accident and has been unable to return to work full time to support his family.

Stripped into Submission (Hi-Ho Lunge, 10PM)

The Society of Sin Burlesque & Variety hosts a sex-pos evening of performance, exploring where burlesque meets BDSM. Xena Zeit-Geist hosts Stripped into Submission, which will feature Miss Lune Noirr (showcasing two new acts), Anjle, Nikki LeVaillain, and Ariana Amour.
