Today in NOLA: 8.17.14

Let the good times roll! The first-ever New Orleans Sushi Fest rolls into Mardi Gras World this afternoon, with live entertainment, traditional crafts, Miss Linda the Ya-Ka-Mein Lady, wrestlers wearing blow-up sumo suits, and oh yes, sushi. The Ashé Cultural Arts Center celebrates another cultural tradition as Mardi Gras Indian elders gather to give awards and share oral histories. Details today:

New Orleans Sushi Fest (Mardi Gras World, 2-5p.m.)
This year’s event will feature local vendors, authentic Japanese art and crafts, and live entertainment from traditional Japanese drumming and local classic rock cover group Bag of Donuts. Sushi Fest benefits the Japan Club and the Japan Society of New Orleans. Tickets $20 at the door, $10 in advance.

16th Annual Mardi Gras Indian Hall of Fame (Ashé Cultural Arts Center, 2-5p.m.)
Mardi Gras Indian elders gather on O.C. Haley for a memorial ceremony and a community conversation. Participating elders include Third Chief Alvin Mutin (age 80) of Yellow Pocahontas; Council Chief Joseph Jenkins (age 82) of Guardians of the Flame; Flag Boy Isaac Edwards (age 91), co-founder of the White Eagles; and Herbert Gettridge (age 93) of Yellow Pocahontas. Free and open to the public.

Louisiana History Alive: Adelina Patti (Shadowbox Theatre, 8p.m.)
At the peak of her career, 19th century diva Adelina Patti commanded $5000 a night—payable in gold, thank you. The virtuoso soprano began her career as a child star. Learn about her life at Louisiana History Alive’s monthly historical re-enactment, where “Patti” will appear to tell stories and sing an aria. Tickets $10.
