Today in NOLA 7.29.17

Today, feast on a shrimp boil (for a good cause!) at The Ace Hotel. Learn the art of brush lettering with Lionheart Prints, or cool off with some very funny people in the Orpheum's Ice Pit. Mecha Con's late night screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show will have you don your cult classic finery. On this day in 1862, Confederate spy Belle Boyd was arrested by Union forces. She was awarded the Southern Cross of Honor for passing information to General Stonewall Jackson. Now, more to do this Saturday.

Summer Shrimp Boil-Off (Seaworthy, 2PM)

Seaworthy's Chef de Cuisine Dan Causgrove will compete against Chef Ysaac Ramirez of Josephine Estelle and Chef Ryan Haigler of Grand Isle to create the best boil. The pros will be shelling fresh shrimp from Pistol P’s Seafood (aka Ricky the Shrimp Guy) in a bid to win the top title. Most importantly, all proceeds from the event will benefit the Audubon G.U.L.F. Institute, an organization which has positively impacted the sustainable seafood industry that is so vital to New Orleans cuisine.

Brush Lettering Workshop (Lionheart Prints, 2PM)

Learn the art of brush lettering in this three-hour intensive course. Lionheart's lettering artist Liz Cooke will lead the course, which will teach how to letter the full alphabet in lowercase and uppercase. Price of the course includes two brush pens, an instructional alphabet, and a practice paper notebook.

Hot Summer Nights in the Ice Pit (Orpheum Theater, 7PM)

The Ice Pit (the Orpheum Basement) will host a night of comedy featuring Tommy "Tee-Ray" Bergeron, James Cusimano, Lauren Malara, Matt Owens, and JD Sledge.

Rocky Horror Picture Show (MechaCon Convention, 12AM)

Anime fest Mecha Con is doing the Time Warp again with a midnight screening series of the 1975 cult classic musical tonight. The longest running theatrical movie of all time stars Tim Curry as the "sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania" Dr. Frank N. Furter. Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick are the hapless young lovers who take shelter at his castle home. For good measure, there are aliens, mad servants, and Meat Loaf on a motorcycle. A Rocky Horror shadow cast will perform and attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favorite characters and bring along props for audience partici-(SAY IT!)-pation.
