Defender Picks

Today in NOLA 7.15.17

Today, bring your food scraps to be collected, learn about starting your own apiary, get down at the Bastille Day Block Party, or immerse yourself in David Bowie. On this day in 1850, Mother Frances Xavier of the Cabrini family, was born. Now, more to do this Saturday.

Food Waste Collection (Rosa Keller Library, 10:30AM)

Compost NOW has partnered with NOPL, as well as Schmelly’s Dirt farm to turn your frozen scraps into nutrient rich compost. Please bring your FROZEN fruit and veg scraps, eggs shells, nutshells, tea bags, coffee grounds, plain pasta or bread in a paper/compostable bag or a reusable container. NO meat, NO dairy, NO oily foods, NO bones. The food must be frozen to be compliant with NOPL as well as combatting smells and pests inside the library.

Urban Beekeeping (Hollygrove Market, 1PM)

This event will be taught by the Southbound Garden’s beekeeper, Caryn Hassel. Hollygrove’s urban beekeeping operation will be demonstrated, and the most important steps to getting started on your own apiary will be explained.

Bastille Day Block Party (Café Degas, 4:30PM)

Local businesses in Faubourg St. John will host this Bastille Day celebration. Live music will be performed by The High Ground Drifters, Ukelele Jake, and Harmonouche. Plenty of local food, kid's activities, and art markets will be on hand for this epic block party. Plus a costume contest to choose the best Napoleon or Marie Antoinette in town.

Oh! You Pretty Things (Howlin Wolf, 10PM)

NOLA’s own burlesque star Bella Blue will be joined by guitarist Rory Callais (of Vox and the Hound) to honor David Bowie’s life through burlesque, music, and visual art. A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit NOCCA.
