Today in NOLA: 6.12.14

This Thursday, join Press Street for a celebration of diverse modern families and local tattoo artists for an exhibition of contemporary body art. On this day in 1912, Allen Parish was incorporated in southwest Louisiana. Read on for more tonight—there’s ice cream!

Loving Day Celebration (Antenna Gallery, 1 - 7 p.m.)

Press Street’s Antenna Gallery hosts a commemoration of Loving v. Virginia, the landmark 1967 Supreme Court decision that ended race-based marriage restrictions. The daylong celebration will feature family activities and Of Many Colors, an exhibit of photographs and interviews with multiracial families. Things get sweet at 4p.m., with a free ice cream social including non-dairy options. Free admission. The Antenna Gallery is located at 3718 St. Claude Avenue.

Ogden After Hours (Ogdem Museum of Southern Art, 6 - 8 p.m.)

This week, the Ogden Museum’s Thursday evening shindig features rootsy rock band Rocket 88 from Oxford, MS. Plus, an activity table to occupy kids and Miss Linda’s Soul Food to cater to your dinnertime cravings. $10 for non-members.

Studio & Gallery Grand Opening (New Orleans Tattoo Museum & Studio, 6p.m.-12a.m.)

Tattoo artists from several local shops display their work at the opening night of the new gallery. The theme of the inaugural show is “Gypsy Blood.” Sales of shirts and prints support the eventual creation of the New Orleans Tattoo Museum. The studio and future home of the museum is at 1915 1/2 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

You Blew It!, The Silent Game, Phargo (The BEATnik, 7p.m.)

Punk’s not dead, and emo rose again. So-called emo revival band You Blew It! might sing about insecurity, but it didn’t stop them calling their last album Keep Doing What You’re Doing. They’re in town tonight from Orlando, playing with local punks The Silent Game and Phargo at the BEATnik.
