Today in NOLA: 5.27.15

Today, check out the myriad of movies and music in the city. Indywood presents Miami Connection and Irma Thomas rocks YLC Wednesdays at the Square.  Then later this evening, catch New Orleans’ own bands, Treme Brass Band and Tin Men. On this day in history, Henry Shreve and his men began the creation of Shreveport (1836), and two regiments of former slaves freed by the Emancipation Proclamation made six unsuccessful charges on the Confederate fortifications at Port Hudson, LA (1863). But now for more on today:

Miami Connection (Indywood, 9p.m.)

This 80s film features ninjas, drugs and rock-n-roll. Head over to Indywood to see the martial arts rock band, Dragon Sound, take on the evil gang who have taken over the narcotics trade in Florida.  Grandmaster Y.K. Kim, a black belt, philosopher, author and inspirational speaker, directs the movie.

Irma Thomas (Lafayette Square, 5p.m.)

Irma Thomas, often known at “The Soul Queen of New Orleans,” will play this afternoon at YLC Wednesdays at the Square. Thomas won a Grammy Award in 2007 for Best Contemporary Blues Album. The weekly concert series is free (often packed) with food and drink available for purchase.

Treme Brass Band (Candlelight Lounge, 9p.m.)

The Treme Brass Band will be playing tonight on their home turf. The band, which continues to make music after the loss of its leader Uncle Lionel Batiste in 2012, has played for audiences all around the world. They’ve been featured in the HBO show Treme as well as Spike Lee’s documentary When The Levees Broke.

Tin Men (d.b.a., 7p.m.)

Catch America’s premiere sousaphone, washboard and Guitar trio tonight at d.b.a.. The iconic Washboard Chaz leads Alex McMurray and Matt Perrine. Since 2002, the New Orleans band has been playing both at home and abroad. John Porter produced their 2013 CD Avocado Woo Woo.
