Today in NOLA 5.26.12

Today, the Greek Fest continues, the Big Easy Comedy Festival yields laughter, grand tastings and wine seminars in the CBD, and Quintron and Miss Pussycat get strange at Siberia. On this day in New Orleans history, the Civil War came to LA when the U.S. Navy began the Mississippi River blockade (1861), the Army of Trans-Mississippi surrendered in New Orleans (1865), and former Governor Edwin Edwards married his 29-year-old girlfriend Candy Picou (1994). Here’s how to seize the day:

NOLA Greek Fest (Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 11:00a.m. - 11:00p.m.) - There are no austerity measures by the Bayou tonight! The annual hedonistic Hellenic party gets cranking tonight where Robert E. Lee Blvd. meets Bayou St. John. Look for authentic cuisine, a Greek marketplace, and of course – the bouzouki!

New Orleans Food and Wine Experience (Marriott Meeting Rooms, 859 Convention Center Blvd) - “Brigtsen’s” Chef Frank Brigtsen, “Boucherie” Chef Nathanial Zimet, “Dante’s Kitchen” Chef Eman Loubier serve up shrimp cornbread, crispy duck confit, and confit pork butt steak, respectively, paired with wines.

Big Easy Comedy Festival (UNO Lakefront Arena, 7:00pm) Mike Epps, Joe Torry, Jay Lamont, Tony Rock, and Gary Owen do stand-up at 3rd annual laugh event.

Lysistrata (Allways Lounge, 8:00pm) - Cripple Creek takes on the Greek classic by Aristophanes, as the women of Greece withhold sexual privileges from their husbands to end the war.

Quintron and Miss Pussycat (Siberia, 10:00pm) - Quintron and Miss Pussycat, the duo behind Morgus’ puppet show, continue inventing instruments and funky vibes at Siberia tonight, followed by Cajun jams by the Los Bayou Ramblers.

Rebirth Brass Band 29th Anniversary Celebration (Howlin Wolf, 10:00pm) The Grammy Award winning local heroes celebrate getting older. This is the second and final night of their weekend celebration at Howlin Wolf in the CBD.
