Today in NOLA: 5.22.16

The Boogaloo wraps up today. In the evening, the music keeps going with some not-to-be-missed shows downtown. On this day in 1961, Ernie K-Doe's Mother-in-Law hit number 1 on the Billboard charts. Now for more of today:

Bayou Boogaloo (Bayou St. John, All-Day)

The little fest that could returns to Mid-City  this weekend. The Boogaloo boasts some big names but the emphasis is on community, sustainability, and grassroots fun. Anders, CC Adcock, and Motel Radio close out the fest today.

Com Truise (Republic, 9p.m.)

Just in time for the “Top Gun” anniversary celebrations, Tom Cruise is coming to town. Well, maybe not quite… Seth Haley a.k.a. Com Truis was an art director and drum & bass DJ who took the plunge into full-time music making. His sound is a synth heavy EDM mix as evidenced by his 2012 sophomore effort, “In Decay.”

Mainline (d.b.a., 10p.m.)

This Nola 8-piece soul-funk band will jam this evening with members of The Soul Rebels at d.b.a. Mainline has played with artists including Trombone Shorty, 50 Cent and Eric Krasno. The band consists of Edward Lee, Erion Williams, Julian Gosin, Paul Robertson, Edward Jackson, Charles James, Danny Abel and Jermal Watson.

Nolatet (Ooh Poo Pah Doo, 10p.m.)

Nolatet is a local allstar band playing in a classic Treme venue. Mike Dillon is a master of vibes and percussion. James Singleton is the city’s foremost upright bass player and Brian Haas is a star on piano. (Legendary drummer, Johnny Vidacovich often makes up the remainder of the group.) Their sound is vibe heavy and their setlists are largely oroginal material composed by the longtime friends.
