Defender Picks

Today in NOLA: 5.18.15

Tonight, Mike Dillon is bringing his high octane sound uptown. Across the rest of the city, music lovers, can check out three popular local gigs. On this day in 1896, Plessy vs. Ferguson established the constitutionality of segregation with “separate but equal” reasoning. Now, more to do this Saturday.

Mike Dillon (Gasa Gasa, 9p.m.)

Dillon is a bandleader, drummer, and vocalist with a very cutting edge. His sound has a heavy dose of punk mixed in with just a little math-rock. His recent collaboration with Skerik and Primus has been making headlines. Dillon and his band have been playing together for almost two years, and the punk rockers have toured with Umphery’s McGee and Marco Benevento.

King James & The Special Men (BJ's Lounge, 10 p.m.)

Bywater haunt brings the perfect soundtrack to red beans & rice with one of the prime working rhythm and blues purveyors around downtown New Orleans. Notable ranging from locals to Jimmy Page have been known to sit in on the regular sessions. Who said you had to stay in on Monday?

George Porter Jr. (The Maple Leaf, 10p.m.)

Porter helped form the Meters with Art Neville in the mid 1960’s, but in recent decades, the legendary funk bassist mostly performs with his Runnin’ Pardners. Porter regularly performs with New Orleans’ best artists, including Johnny Vidacovich, the Soul Rebels, and Dr. John.

Alexis and the Samurai (Chickie Wah Wah 8p.m.)

The young Indie Folk/Pop duo performs every Monday night. Head to Canal and see Alexis Marceaux on the guitar/aux percussion/vocals, plus Sam Craft takes on the keyboard, the violin, the guitar, and more.
