Defender Picks

Today in NOLA: 5.12.15

Mike Dillon and Stanton Moore are still in town. Kid Chocolate is at Bullet’s and the library is getting culinary. On this day in 1902, the State Board of Education was created (and there has been controversy round it ever since). Now, more to do this Tuesday.

Mike Dillon (Gasa Gasa, 9p.m.)

Dillon is a bandleader, drummer, and vocalist with a very cutting edge. His sound has a heavy dose of punk mixed in with just a little math-rock. His recent collaboration with Skerik and Primus has been making headlines. Dillon and his band have been playing together for almost two years, and the punk rockers have toured with Umphery’s McGee and Marco Benevento.

Leon “Kid Chocolate” Brown (Bullet’s, 8p.m.)

The legendary Bob French dubbed Brown “Kid Chocolate” in 2000 and the trumpet man has worked hard to live up to the honor. His work is heavily influenced by mentors such as Clyde Kerr, Jr., Frederick "Shepp" Sheppard, and Anthony "Tuba Fats" Lacen. Today, he is taking a break from his post at the Royal Sonesta to play Bullet’s.

Stanton Moore Trio (Snug Harbor, 10p.m.)

On Tuesday evenings this May, Astral Project bassist James Singleton and pianist David Torkanowsky join Galactic drummer Stanton Moore on at Snug Harbor, a local favorite among the jazz venues on Frenchmen Street. Each man in this trio can boast a broad range, but this month, their sets together will be oriented towards modern jazz and funk. Tickets $15.

Fun, Funky, and Fabulous (Cita Dennis Hubbell Library, 6:30p.m.)

Jyl Benson and Kit Wohl talk about and sign their recent New Orleans cookbooks. There will be lots of emphasis on Creole and the works provide an excellent bridge between the historic recipes that defined the genre and the modern day wonders served up around the city.
