Defender Picks

Today in NOLA: 5.04.15

The Fest has passed, but some of the celebration lingers. A mini-parade and a mini-fest are both in store. Locals are returning to their weekly gigs but some out-of-towners are still laying down the funk. On this date in 1970, author T.H. Williams won a Pulitzer Prize for his biography on Huey Long. Now, more to do before it gets too late.

May the Fourth/Shoeboxus (Royal & Frenchmen, 6p.m.)

May the Fourth be with you. Chewbacchus is hosting an out-of-season parade comprised of pint sized shoe box floats. (The event surely has raised some eyebrows over at ‘tit Rex.) Actor Drew Varick (American Horror Story) will reign as king of the event boiling itself as the “Biggest” miniature parade out there.

Alexis and the Samurai (Chickie Wah Wah 8p.m.)

The young Indie Folk/Pop duo performs every Monday night. Head to Canal and see Alexis Marceaux on the guitar/aux percussion/vocals, plus Sam Craft takes on the keyboard, the violin, the guitar, and more.

The Nth Power (Republic, 9p.m.)

The Nth Power is barely a year old. Yet, the band’s members have decades of serious experience and the group is already the “new big thing”in funk. Members include Nikki Glaspie (drums/vocals), Nigel Hall (keys/vocals), Nick Cassarino (guitar/vocals), Nate Edgar (bass), and Weedie Braimah (percussion).

Frenchmen Mini-Fest (Louisiana Music Factory, 12p.m.-7p.m.)

For one last time this year, local will gather in the beloved music shop on Frenchmen to catch some tunes. Washboard Chaz, Kim Carson, the New Orleans Jazz Viper, Eric Lindell, and Luke Winslow-King are all on the lineup today,
