Defender Picks

Today in NOLA: 4.06.16

A French EDM act is coming to town and locals will be flocking to Lafayette Square. A few classic NOLA gigs are also making their regular appearances on the Monday calendar. On this day in Louisiana history, Huey Long’s impeachment trial began in 1929. Now, more to do in 2016.

M83 (Civic, 9p.m.)

Make your way to the CBD and hear some French trance pop from M83. Sun Airway will open up the night, then M83 will make you dance along to tracks from their 2012 album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming.

Meschiya Lake & Tom McDermott (Chickie Wah Wah, 8p.m.)

You’re not likely to mistake Meschiya Lake for any other jazz singer. With fiery hair, colorful tattoos, and a bold singing voice, this South Dakota native turned New Orleans local wouldn’t have it any other way. She’s known for a contemporary update on vintage jazz, brought to life with unique stage presence and deep appreciation for the past. McDermott shares that appreciation on the keys. The virtuoso can play anything from ragtime to funk, but tends to skew towards the standards. Together, the combo is a must-see.

Wednesday at the Square (Lafayette Square, 6p.m.)

In spring, hundreds flock to the Square weekly for this immensely popular outdoor music series. The YLC benefits are like a mini-fest replete with food and drink vendors. Today, fiddle virtuoso Amanda Shawheadlines.

Walter "Wolfman" Washington (d.b.a., 10pm)

Washington has been playing local gigs since the 1970’s, and fans keep coming back for his masterful guitar work and soulful vocals. Head to Frenchmen, and enjoy a mix of blues, funk, and R&B from one of the City’s favorite musicians.

Major Bacon (Banks Street Bar, 10 p.m.)

Patrons can enjoy blues beats from the Grammy nominated rock band as well as FREE BLT’s. The trio captures audiences’ attention with solid guitar solos and well-crafted rhythms. This is a no-cover event.
