Today in NOLA 3.31.17

This Friday, find sympathy for the devil with the New Orleans Opera. The Saenger welcomes an orchestral performance of the “Final Fantasy” theme music, while the Roamin’ Jasmine plays Bar Mon Cher. City Park will host an art show and sale en plein air in their Botanical Garden. This day in history, St. John the Baptist Parish was created (1807), and "I Wonder" by Louis Amstrong and His Orchestra entered the R&B Jukebox Chart (1945). Now, more to do tonight.

RESPONSE - Artists in the Park (City Park, 6:30PM)

City Park stays open late to host an art exhibition and sale en plein air. The diverse works featured, from paintings and photography to ceramics, are made in “response” to the beauty of the park itself. Music will be supplied by Javier Gutierrez, with small bites and cocktails served up in the Botanical Garden.

Faust (Mahalia Jackson Theater, 8PM)

The Charles Gounod-penned French opera returns to the New Orleans Opera repertoire after almost a decade. Based on Goethe’s famed tale of a man who makes a deal with the devil, the opera features Sarah Jane McMahon in the soprano and romantic lead and Paul Groves in the title role. Robert Lyall will conduct the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in accompaniment.

Distant Worlds (Saenger Theatre, 8PM)

Nobuo Uematsu’s music from the video game series “Final Fantasy” will be performed on the Saenger stage tonight in a stop along an international concert tour. Grammy Award-winning Arnie Roth will conduct the 94-piece Distant Worlds Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, set to visuals on a big screen suspended above the orchestra.

The Roamin’ Jasmine (Bar Mon Cher, 9:30PM)

This five-piece band formed on the streets of New Orleans, performing an intoxicating mix of jazz, calypso, and swing. In just a few years, they’ve moved on up performing at all-star venues like Bacchanal, d.b.a.,  Maison, and more. In anticipation of a European tour, The Roamin’ Jasmine is hitting up their favorite spots — tonight, they will play Bar Mon Cher, the 1800s era landmark nightspot.
