Today in NOLA: 3.28.16

Tonight is a great opportunity to check out some local music before the festival season influx begins. Colin Lake, Luke Winslow King, the Crooked Vines, and King James are all playing in town. Delta Flight 727 from New Orleans to Dallas was hijacked and rerouted to Cuba on this day in 1984. Now, more 2016 events.

Colin Lake (B.B. King’s, 8p.m.)

Rising NOLA guitarist offers a bluesy, soulful, folky sound. Lake has been building a name for himself on the roots scene for several years and with the release of his 2015 album “One Thing That’s For Sure,” he is breaking out. Catch him while he still is playing smaller venues.

Crooked Vines (Maison, 10p.m.)

CV is a local funk-pop collective comprised of Steven Schwartz on tenor sax and keyboard, Lori LaPatka on alto sax, Woody Hill on drums, Nick Carlisi on guitar, James Keene on trombone, Sam Fruend on bass, and Mikayla Braun on vocals and keyboard. The band released their debut album last October.

King James & the Special Men (Sidney’s, 10p.m.)

For half of a decade, King James & the Special Men played at BJ’s and built themselves a reputation as one of the prime working rhythm and blues purveyors around downtown New Orleans. Notable ranging from locals to Jimmy Page were known to sit in on the regular sessions. Now, they are switching venues, but the sound (and the free red beans) remain the same.

Luke Winslow King (d.b.a., 7p.m.)

King kicks off the music tonight on Frenchmen. He mixes elements of traditional jazz and blues while driving an energetic rock n' roll sound. His latest album Everlasting Arms was released in October 2014. Though King is a transplant who has adopted New Orleans as his home, he has been much influenced by the notes of Cajun country with tracks like "Levee Man." If you're out and about, catch this free show and see what Mr. King is all about.
