Today in NOLA: 3.26.16

Yanni is here! Plus, Cali punk conglomerate Hard Girls is in town. Chris Royal is uptown and Rebirth is downtown. Check out the Raw Oyster Cult at Tip’s or get your dance on at Circle Bar. On this day in 1911, the West End Streetcar took its first ride. Now, more on Saturday happenings.

Yanni (Saenger, 8p.m.)

What is their really to add about Greek keyboardist, composer, and producer Yanni. His name is synonymous with new age. He also boast quite a few late night infomercials.

Hard Girls (Gasa Gasa, 9p.m.)

Hard Girls is a super group of Cali punk featuring members of Shinobu, Pteradon, and The Bruce Lee Band. However, this project adds some pop to their sound.

Khris Royal (Maple Leaf, 10p.m.)

Royal is one of several local musicians that emerged from NOCCA and then quickly built a name for themselves in the chaotic period after the storm. The sax master can handle the classic but really thrives when experimenting with sounds and gear. He has eagled audiences through his band, Dark Matter, touring the West Coast’s Rebelution, and playing with George Porter Jr. since 2009. Tonight, he shows off some new work.

Mod Dance Party (Circle Bar, 9p.m.)

For almost 16 years DJ Matty spun groovy and psychedelic sound of the 60s (and a little bit of the 70’s). The Mod Dance Party alternates between Saturn Bar and the Circle Bar weekly, but is always a blast.

Rebirth (d.b.a., 11p.m.)

Come out to Frenchmen for not one, but two sets from the double Grammy-winning brass band. Led by Derrick Tabb and Tuba Phil, the group has played worldwide, but there is no better place to see them than here, at home.

Darcy Malone & The Tangle + Raw Oyster Cult (Tip’s, 9p.m.)

Members of the Radiators, Papa Grows Funk, and Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes comprise the super group ROC. Dave Malone founded the quartet, who draw from their funk, jazz, and rock-and-roll backgrounds. The Tangles also feature plenty of Radiators alumni and release a new album tonight.
