Today in NOLA: 2.8.15

The first weekend of Carnival is coming to a close but not before going out with a bang. Before noon, costume enthusiasts have an opportunity to shop at the NOLA Designer Costume Bazaar. The Uptown parades begin rolling around noon, and Barkus starts its pawmenade through the Quarter at 2p.m. In 1922, ground was broken for the Notre Dame Seminary on Carrollton. And now, back to what’s going on today in NOLA.

Nola Designer Costume Bazaar (New Orleans Healing Center, 11a.m.-5p.m.)

The annual bazaar is back for it’s 24th year in a row. It will feature local creative designers, mad hatters, mask makers, and more! The event used to be held at Café Brasil when it was still open on Frenchmen, then it migrated to the Blue Nile, where Threadhead Cultural Foundation signed on as sponsor. Having grown since its formative years, NOLA Designer Costume Bazaar uses the Healing Center’s well lit space for its single day event that celebrates a vast assortment of unique and locally inspired creations.

Aural Elixir (Café Istanbul, 6-9p.m.)

Jesse Maclaine, Margie Perez, and Johnny Vidacovich are at Café Istanbul tonight for the Aquarian Birthday/Costume Party. It starts an hour after the Designer Costume Bazaar ends, giving patrons just enough time to run home and change. Free snacks will be provided by Fatoush, as well as cake! Aural Elixir is Jesse Maclaine’s solo act, but she often plays with other local greats. Maclaine finds a middle ground between strong and spaced out vocals only adding to her eclectic jazz/rock/folk sound.

Barkus (French Quarter, 2p.m.)

The doggy parade kicks off early this afternoon. Following a route that starts in Armstrong Park and zig zags for 15 blocks through the Quarter to Jackson Square and back again to Armstrong Park. There’s no shortage of pleasure watching these pups strut their bedazzled selves for Carnival Season. The theme for 2015 is Barkus Wars: Return of the K9.  Andouille Lemarie, aka “Dewey” is the reigning king this year, and the Queen is Ashley Renaudin, a lab/pit mix adopted from Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter.  Registration starts at 9a.m., with park festivities to commence at 10a.m. for participants.
