Today in NOLA: 2.29.16

Happy Leap Year! Celebrate your extra day with local favorites like Luke Winslow King, Nicholas Payton, George Porter Jr., and Gerald French. Today in 1964, Louis Armstrong’s biggest hit, "Hello, Dolly" entered the Billboard Top 40. It would later knock The Beatles off the top of the charts. Now, more to do in 2016.

Luke Winslow King (d.b.a., 7p.m.)

King kicks off the music tonight on Frenchmen. He mixes elements of traditional jazz and blues while driving an energetic rock n' roll sound. His latest album Everlasting Arms was released in October 2014. Though King is a transplant who has adopted New Orleans as his home, he has been much influenced by the notes of Cajun country with tracks like "Levee Man." If you're out and about, catch this free show and see what Mr. King is all about.

George Porter Jr. (Maple Leaf, 9:30p.m.)

Porter helped form the Meters with Art Neville in the mid 1960’s, but in recent decades, the legendary funk bassist mostly performs with his Runnin’ Pardners. Porter regularly performs with New Orleans’ best artists, including Johnny Vidacovich, the Soul Rebels, and Dr. John.

Gerald French & the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band (Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse, 8:00pm)

Founded in 1910, the Original Tuxedos have the longest history of continuous performances in New Orleans. Gerald French took over the band last year, whose uncle, Bob French, had directed for the last 25 years. And, Before Bob, there was Albert “Papa” French. Classic New Orleans Jazz.

Nicholas Payton (Tableau, 5:30p.m.)

Nicholas Payton is a NOLA born master of the trumpet. He spends much of his time on the road, but tonight, he is home. Beyond his Grammy award winning skills, Payton has also built a name for himself as a writer and as an activist  for social justice.
