Today in NOLA 2.25.17

Take a break from all the fests and feasts happening this weekend, and check out some of the unique cultural events around town this Saturday. Comedy legend Chris Rock is blowing up the Saenger tonight. Film society Caravan Cinema will screen a 1990s cult comedy, starring RuPaul and “Orange is the New Black” star Natasha Lyonne, for free in the French Quarter. The geniuses over at Howlin Wolf combine emerging art and breakfast foods, while Fleur de Tease offerings their burlesque retelling of Alice in Wonderland. The Dixiana Bakery, famous for its Sarah Bernhardt Cake (rich wine cake with nuts, red apple jelly glaze and whipped cream) celebrated it’s grand reopening on this day in 1950. Now more things to do this Saturday.

Movie Screening: But I'm a Cheerleader (St. Mark's Church, 6PM)

Caravan Cinema's inaugural screening in a new movie series will be held at St. Mark’s Church in the Quarter. The Church is a pillar of the LGBTQ community and offers the perfect backdrop for a screening of the 1999 dark comedy, “But I’m a Cheerleader.” The movie follows high school cheerleader Megan (played by Natasha Lyonne) whose parents send her to True Directions, a homosexuality conversion therapy camp. Megan begins a journey of self discovery and ultimate acceptance. The cult classic also stars Clea DuVall, RuPaul Charles, and Cathy Moriarty. Free entry, but donations will go to charity.

Chris Rock (The Saenger Theatre, 7PM)

In the nearly ten years since his last tour and special, Chris Rock has been honing his “Total Blackout” set. “Blackout” is a mix of timely political commentary and reflections on fatherhood, failed marriages, and fame he’s observed the last decade. Tonight, the comedy icon's three-night residency at the Saenger kicks off.

Pancakes and Booze Art Show (The Howlin Wolf, 8PM)

More than 50 local emerging artists will be on display at The Howlin Wolf’s underground art show. $5 will get you access to the show, plus live body painting and a pancake bar. A curation of paintings, sculptures, mixed media will be shown, with live DJ sets from Dr. Gonzo, AHalo, and HOUSEOB’s Aaron Underwood & dj collapse.

Alice in Wonderland (One Eyed Jack’s, 8PM)

Trashy Diva and Fifi Mahonys are sponsoring this new burlesque revue from Fleur de Tease. Created and produced by Trixie Minx, the adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland” combines the surreal adventures of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale with the high-quality productions Minx has come to be known for in the performance scene. Expect aerialists, magicians, comedians, fire eaters, and a bevy of burlesque performers to take the stage. Can’t make it tonight? Fleur de Tease will also be performing at Jack’s on Sunday (3.26).
