TODAY IN NEW ORLEANS 8.11.12If you didn’t wake up bright and early to put on your red dress and run amok for local charities, you might have enough energy left for the rest of the day’s events. Mia Borders is at the Rusty Nail, there’s a Freaksheaux at the Allways Lounge, and it’s also the Second Saturday of the month. Dirty Linen Night is bringing some art appreciation to the French Quarter after last week’s lily-white Julia St. affair. Today in Louisiana history, Treme Brass Band leader and snare drummer Benny Jones Sr. was born in New Orleans, in 1943, and a hurricane killed more than 400 people on the Louisiana Coast in 1856.
Red Dress Run (Armstrong Park, 9:30am)
It’s that time of year to get dolled up and drink for charity with thousands of fellow philanthropists. Red Dress Run meets at Armstrong Park at 9:30, and they’re still accepting registrations upon arrival. For $70, the Hash House Harriers will provide all the beer, music, and Corky’s BBQ that one’s heart could desire. Proceeds will go to a long list of local non-profits, so come hungry, thirsty, and dress accordingly.
Dirty Linen Night (French Quarter, 6pm)
Shake out last weekend’s outfit and high tail it to the Quarter. It’s Royal St.’s turn to open up their galleries and businesses for a night of cocktails and crafts. If you’re not too tuckered out after the Red Dress Run, come stroll down Royal from the 200-1000 blocks from 6-10pm. You can even bring the kids to Angela King Gallery for their Dr. Seuss exhibition, or you can make it a late night at the SoBou after party with artisanal cocktails.
Great American Seafood Cookoff (Convention Center, 11:30 am)
Contestants from all over the country are coming to New Orleans to compete. The only condition is, they have to bring locally harvested ingredients from their respective states. Chefs Keith and Nealy Frentz from the Northshore (Lola) earned themselves a spot, and tickets can be purchased at Whole Foods locations for $5 and at the door for $10.
Freaksheaux to Geaux (Allways Lounge, 10pm)
Tonight’s bizarre bash—The Ford Theater Reunion Reunion! features performances from Mistress Kali, Natalie Zarelli, Thugsy Da Clown, Chatty the Mime, Alley Oops!, and Mina Menchante. The stars will be accompanied by the Freaksheaux Band, with lovely Liza Rose from Seattle and Audacity Leigh from Dallas.
Mia Borders at the Rusty Nail (Rusty Nail, 10pm)
Local songwriter, singer, and guitarist Mia Borders is making a stop at the Rusty Nail tonight to play some favorites along with songs from her new album, “Wherever There Is.”
Urban Education Smackdown, Shadowbow Theater, 8pm
Local playwright and performer Jim Fitzmorris takes on New Orleans’ Charter Schools, drawing from his experiences as an educator within the current system. General admission is $15, $10 for students and educators.
Boobs and Goombas, Allways Lounge, 10pm
Voyeuristic video gamers will love Boobs and Goombas: A Super Mario Burlesque. Come see ladies dressed in everything from princess attire to Mario mustaches get down while they rescue the princess. If the cast collects enough coins along the way, they may unveil the alternative ending! Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online. |
