Today in New Orleans 3.12.14

Tonight, the Honorable South opens for Cody ChestnuTT at Tip’s, and Shotgun Cinema is back with a new French film installment at the Marigny Opera House. On this day in 1997, former Governor EWE took $400,000 cash in a briefcase from 49ers owner Eddie Debartolo in an extortion payoff. Now, more to do this Wednesday.

Cody ChestnuTT & The Honorable South (Tipitina’s, 9 p.m.)

ChestnuTT is back after a long hiatus. The soulful rock artist released The Headphone Masterpiece in 2002, and he gained recognition for his hit song “I Look Good in Leather.” ChestnuTT is joined by local genre-defying rockers The Honorable South. Tickets are $17.

The Gleaners and I (Marigny Opera House, 7 p.m.)

The next installment of Shotgun Cinema presents a French documentary made by Agnes Varda in 2001. The film follows gleaners, rural and urban people who collect leftover items like crops from farmers’ fields or used materials for art. Tickets are $7 at the door, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Cash and credit cards are accepted.

Eric Bolivar Birthday Bash (Maple Leaf, 10 p.m.)

Local funk drummer Bolivar is celebrating his birthday with some of his best and most talented friends. Bolivar has been playing regularly in the Crescent City since before Katrina, when he and Anders Osborne began performing together.

History of Big Easy Brewing (Maple Street Books, 6 p.m.)

Author, blogger, and Beer Buddha Jeremy Labadie is discussing New Orleans’ hoppy history and signing copies of his latest book New Orleans Beer: A Hoppy History of Brewing in the Crescent City. Labadie discusses New Orleans’ time as the brewing capital of the south, as well as pre-prohibition brewing in the Big Easy.
