Today in New Orleans 12.23.13

As New Orleans approaches Christmas, holiday parties continue to pop up at Lee Circle and House of Blues. Local rapper Dee-1 is ending his tour tonight at The Republic. Before there was a midnight mass in Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral was dedicated on this date in 1794. Now, more to do this Monday.

Home for the Holidays (House of Blues, 7:30 p.m.)

New Orleans has produced a number of nationally recognized talents, and they are spending the holidays at home. Trombone Shorty and his brother James Andrews, John Boutte, Herlin Riley, Rebirth Brass Band and Kermit Ruffins & the Barbeque Swingers are performing. Tickets are $37, and the show kicks off when doors open, at 7:30 p.m.

Christmas Spectacular (Circle Bar, 10 p.m.)

Anne Owens presents the second installation in a two-night, seasonal celebration in Lee Circle. Royal Attire and Dead Marshes were on the bill Sunday, and tonight’s spectacular gives revelers one last chance to drink and be merry before their family gatherings.

George Porter Jr., Terrence Houston & Khris Royal (The Maple Leaf, 10 p.m.)

George Porter Jr. is keeping things funky for the holidays at one of the city's most beloved Uptown music venues. The Meters’ legendary bassist is back this week with a new band. Terrence Houston is on the drums, along with Khris Royal on the sax.

Dee-1 (The Republic, 9 p.m.)

An alum of Ben Franklin, Dee-1 has gotten national attention as one of New Orleans’ fastest growing talents. The conscious rapper avoids talk of sex, drugs and money, instead focusing his lyrics on positive thinking, literacy and Christian values. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., tickets are $7.
