Today in New Orleans: Second Line, Boogaloo and Dubstep

Today, a pair of second lines from Zulu and the Divine Ladies keep the Uptown and downtown streets occupied, the Bayou Boogaloo wraps up in Mid-City and a dubstep pioneer comes to the Quarters. On this day in New Orleans history, 25 people died after The Planters Hotel collapsed (1835), and the 504 Boyz album "Goodfellaz" debuted at no. 1 on the R&B charts and #2 on the pop chart (2000). Don't let today collapse before checking out these:

Zulu Social Aide and Pleasure Club Anniversary Parade (St. Claude and Touro, 1 p.m.) Downtown, the Zulu Social Aide and Pleasure Club does what it does best: have a parade. The Club starts the proceedings with a Mass at Our Lady Star of the Sea at 10 a.m., followed by a parade that starts outside Sweet Lorraine's at 1 p.m. The route takes the march through the Seventh Ward and Treme, eventually ending up at the Zulu Headquarters at Orleans and Broad. More route info here.

Divine Ladies Second Line (St. Charles and Jackson Ave., 1 p.m.) Marching to the theme, "It is what it is: We are Still Standing," this Uptown social aide and pleasure club takes its annual strut through Central City. WWOZ has the full route here.

Bayou Boogaloo (Bayou St. John, 11 a.m. - sundown) The annual party on the banks of the Bayou wraps up with the annual Rubber Duck Derby, and plenty of music including Russell Batiste and Uptown Mardi Gras Indians, Feufollet, Irene Sage's tribute to Coco Robicheaux and much more!

Distance (Dragon's Den, 10:00 p.m.) Dubstep has been taking Europe all-night partiers by force in many different incarnations. But where did this all-out craze begin? Well, with a small network of producers and DJs that circulated their music largely amongst themselves in East London. One of those producers was Distance, and he'll help you go the Distance at Dragon's Den tonight.

Yann Tiersen (House of Blues, 9:00 p.m.) Remember the theme from Amelie? Well someone wrote that, and he's more than just a Hollywood songwriter trying to make a buck. Yann Tiersen is a French musician who is both a composer and album artist.

NOLA Theatre Remeber that handful of spring plays Jim Fitzmorris was telling us about? Well all five are open as of tonight! Tonight's schedule features the opening of Cripple Creek's Lysistrata at Allways Theatre, plus  As You Like it  in the NOMA Sculpture Garden, Psycho Beach Party at Mid-City Theatre, Shirley Valentine at the CAC. And don't forget about skating over to see the Best Bank's current delight, Xanadu.
